Rodrigo Arias For President in 2014?
Although Oscar Arias has yet to leave office and Laura Chinchilla has to take her place in the history of Costa Rica, there is already talk about who will follow her in 2014.
Could it be Rodrigo Arias, brother of president Oscar and current ministro de la Presidencia?
At least that is the latest gossip coming out of the Arias administration as it winds down its mandate on May 8.
The gossip is fueled by the fact that Rodrigo is taking a bigger public role in the last weeks in office, possibly to leave a strong impression if and when he makes his bid for the presidential chair.
If you look closely at the role of Rodrigo of the last four years, he was taken up a role more of a “prime minister” than just another minister in the administration or that of just Oscar’s brother.
The Rodrigo bid can happen as Laura, as any other president, is barred for running for re-election consecutively, meaning she like the others, would have to wait out one term before making another bid.
If that had not been the case, Oscar would have surely run himself in this past election, instead of privately campaining for Laura and certainly would, if health allows, run in 2014, 2018, 2022 and so on.
We say privately because sitting presidents are prohibited by law to show favouritism to any one or more candidates. Sitting presidents are to be impartial and not speak their opinion, publicly, on politics.
So, if Rodrigo would run, who would he face? Otto Guevara, Ottón Solís, Rafael Angel Calderón (if he is not in jail) and possibly even brother Oscar, who might just decide to take on the presidency for a third term?
2014 could be an interesting year, politically.

sounds like the tinocos to me. where is carmen lyra when we need her?

Rodrigo Arias will make an excellent president. I do hope that he’ll run in 2014. It was obvious, that it was him who ran the country operationally during the second administration of his brother. In my opinion, he did an excellent job at it.
Laura Chinchilla will put her on stamp on the presidency during the term from 2010 to 2014 and so will don Rodrigo, should he become the official PLN candidate and get himself elected by the Costa Ricans.
As far as I am concerned, I don’t see any other party or candidate today who could do better than him.
Costa Rica could do a lot worse!
